Girlstown Guatemala, Class of 2012
I grew up in a simple, united family full of love. Although our resources were limited, my parents, through tireless effort, provided us with the most essential.
One day, during a vacation at my maternal grandmother’s house, I heard an announcement in church that would change my life forever: “We are looking for girls who wish to continue studying. Scholarships are available in Guatemala City.” That simple message sparked an enormous hope within me. I excitedly told my mom. At first, she had doubts—like any mother—but my father, with firm faith, told me, “If this is what you want, I will support you.” And that was the beginning of my journey toward a new beginning.
Villa de los Niños welcomed me with open doors and warmth that I still carry in my heart. I remember looking out the window during the admission process, seeing the courts and buildings, wondering: “Will I study here?” When I finally entered, I knew I was in a special place, full of light, faith, and purpose.
The first days were a challenge. Many girls already knew each other, and everything was new to me. But over time, my classmates became my sisters. I learned how to coexist, share, appreciate the little things, and be thankful for every opportunity. At Villa, I was taught, without them saying it directly, that being strong doesn’t mean not having fear, but moving forward with courage.
It was four years of profound formation: academic, spiritual, and personal. I learned that dreams are built with discipline, effort, and a lot of faith. I discovered talents I didn’t know I had. I worked hard to give my best so my parents wouldn’t worry, and every time I saw them, I told them with certainty: “I have everything here.” Because that’s how it was.
After graduating, I continued my university studies and began my professional journey. Years later, in 2021, I participated in a retreat organized by the Association of Alumni of Guatemala (ASEVIGUA). It was an experience that reconnected me with my roots and motivated me to get more involved. In 2022, I took on the challenge of leading the association, and for three years, I worked to strengthen the bonds between alumni and continue giving back all that Villa provided us. Today, I continue to collaborate actively, convinced that our story doesn’t end when we leave Villa, but rather, it just begins.
I am a professional thanks to the principles instilled in me from a young age, both in my home and at Villa. I carry with me the greatest lesson: never stop believing, never stop fighting, give thanks, and always trust that God puts us on the right path at the right moment.
My life changed thanks to the legacy of Father Al and the love of the Sisters. What he created is not just a school: it is a work of life, a miracle that continues to transform thousands of stories like mine.
To you reading this, Villa de las Niñas is not just a school. It is a home, a refuge, a miracle in the midst of the world. There, fear turns into hope, effort turns into achievement, and every girl or boy is given the possibility to dream big. From the depths of my heart, I invite you to join this beautiful mission—whether as a donor, volunteer, supporter, or simply by spreading the word.
Because when a girl or boy enters Villa, they don’t just receive an opportunity… they receive a new life.
Infinite thanks to Father Al, the Sisters of Mary. Thank you to everyone who makes this miracle possible every day.
